  2. Unfortunately AVG internet security had detected it as a trojan horse (PY) and put it in quarantine while I was downloading a video clip from youtube just for testing purpose ! So I uninstalled and removed it from my PC … Can’t take the risk ! I did some research about the developer of this software and there is not much information neither reviews about their products.

    • AVG is notorious for releasing software with a virus in it ( see their acquisition of CCleaner and the resulting sullied reputation ), and their mother company, Avast, has been breached, losing user data into the wild, their products have been discovered to collect and resell user data through their subsidiary Jumpshot, they employed notoriously fraudulent iYogi to provide support, and were under investigation at least in 2020, so there’s that.

I check the installer at FREE VirusTotal ( subjecting any submission to ~70-ish different anti-malware tests, including Avast and AVG – join/create a FREE log-in at FREE VirusTotal and then we can see details behavior of the tested file ), then I also check each installed program file at FREE VirusTotal, and make my own ‘do I trust it? do I care?’ assessment from there.

Some anti-malware programs go way overboard removing PUPs ‘potentially unwanted programs’ because, hey, they want to show they are doing something more than the competition.

What is a PUP ‘potentially unwanted program’?

      Who knows?

Do PUPs damage or compromise security?

      No.

At worst, they do exactly as they promise in their TOS terms of service, which might include installing additional software, a browser extension, a background ‘buy me’ nag, or reporting user usage to their mothership – none of this is totally hidden, just buried in their terms of service.

Regardless, no PUP I’ve ever seen steals or destroys.

And regardless, OKmusi does not show up as even a PUP at FREE VirusTotal, including analysis by Avast and AVG.

Maybe there is a conflict between newly signed or unsigned programs and dates in your particular AVG installation where it dings newly released things because they have not been tested yet, so they are being overcautious, who knows?

Maybe because the program installed in user directories, or ‘watches’ the computer’s audio and video bus to record, or installs auto-run elements, or has zipped contents or performs DNS lookups, AVG thinks it’s doing something bad, but that’s what programs do, especially programs that browse the web, seek download options, and download our choice from those options, as well as compiling and converting to local re-playable files.

If AVG does not tell us explicitly why, and give me complete informed control, then I would stop trusting AVG, and I would move on.

Note, some anti-malware programs remove the competition and or anyone they had IP intellectual property arguments with, such as Malwarebytes removing IObit and Auslogics programs, not because those programs are dangerous, but because Malwarebytes has outstanding arguments with the vendors, the removed programs themselves are safe and secure, Malwarebytes is essentially lying.

So, does AVG have an argument with OKmusi or it’s mother company programmers?

Study Avast and their acquisition of AVG at Wikipedia and other independent sources, and make your own decision.

I think of Avast as another Symantec in their growth-by-acquisition, and hey, they hired a Symantec person as CEO, so of course!

Note also that there is much industry hullabaloo over the Youtube downloader function, the IP intellectual property industries screaming that it allows people to rip off the music and videos that folks can freely hear and see, so, I’m only speculating here, but Avast/Avg/Norton/Lifelock et alia may ( may ) be dinging OKmusi because it uses the nefarious but official YouTube downloader function, and Avast wants to be friends with the big music and movie industries.

Who knows? I’m only speculating why AVG would ding a program that FREE VirusTotal – including AVG – reports as having no dings.

The program works well for me, grabbing Facebook videos no problem, and collecting a series of YouTube videos no problem.

I think the report about AVG is all about AVG, not about OKmusi at all.

Thanks for letting us explore this and share.
