VCapDL mostly skips that step. It opens the page in its own Chromium-based browser, watches the network traffic, and grabs the HLS or MPEG-DASH manifest the player is already using. In practice that lets it catch streams on sites nobody wrote a parser for, and it handles the annoying case where audio and video arrive as separate tracks by merging them for you. The trade-off is reach on the big platforms. Direct integrations cover a short list (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Vimeo), and the 0.1.x version number tells you this is still a young project. This is probably a clone of Shareware On Sale offering of this.
As usual this developer steal and illegally distribute GPLv3 licensed builds of FFMPEG.ORG binaries and uses proprietary youtube downloader engine that will cease to function sometime in the future rendering the lifetime license pointless as you cannot get an update to the new version under the giveaway license, you either buy an update or wait until they release a new version ad infinitum. They also use an ancient insecure and unsupported version 96 of CEF to embed a chrome browser window into the User Interface. They also place an unrestrained browser cache that is not kept down to a reasonable size in the
C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\VCapDL\CefCache
You should periodically delete that folder to clean up after this messy program to avoid filling up your system drive unnecessarily.

No, VCap Downloader Pro v0.1.5 does NOT contain malware, and VirusTotal confirms this.

1 – Go to VirusTotal and read the results, there are NO actual ‘detections’, there is nothing found to be malicious in this program, only 2 ‘signature/rule’ matches ( what I consider to be overzealous, that is, they would ding the ‘format’ command because, hey, it can erase things, oh my! But it makes their software test as finding more ‘things’ than other anti-malware programs. ):

2 – VCap Downloader Pro v0.1.5 is ‘unsigned’ **, so Microsoft and others consider it ‘untrustworthy’, NOT because it is untrustworthy, but because they have no audit trail for the author or any way of knowing if it is original or has been modified . . . hence why we go to VirusTotal to check things out, we even check signed programs directly from Microsoft, yes we do!

** Note: A signed program is digitally signed and associated with a separate digital certificate that identifies the publisher and allows auditing to see if the program has been modified to no longer match the certificate. Some download programmers do NOT want to be easily dinged by lawyers from Warner Brothers and the Motion Picture Association, so the programmers don’t want to ‘sign’ their work, it puts them at risk as self-identified ‘low hanging fruit’ for spurious lawsuits. VCap Downloader Pro v0.1.5 installs under the ‘user’ directory, which I do not like ( I like all programs to be easily findable in ‘programs’ ), but it allows this to install where some users have no permission because their company’s tech support locks the ‘program’ directories for administrators only, so this should install on even limited-access computers just fine.
It works for me, no scary risky results, it just does not also grab optional subtitles that are displayed over the video rather than inside the video, drat.
