What SideNote Pro actually does, and how well
The core idea is smart and the execution holds up. Instead of you going to the AI, SideNote Pro comes to your workspace. The drawer mode solves the screen-real-estate problem cleanly: press Esc when done and it folds into a slim strip at the screen edge, holding your thread and position until you need it again.

The BYOK architecture remains the standout characteristic. Setup requires either an API account or an OpenRouter sign-in before the assistant does anything. OpenRouter is the easier path: authenticate in the browser and you are connected without copying an API key. For full privacy, pointing it at a local Ollama or LM Studio model means nothing leaves the machine at all.
Recent updates fill in gaps that previously mattered. Scanned and image-only PDFs now work with vision-capable models instead of being rejected outright. Web search brings real-time information into conversations on supported providers. The new edit-in-place workflow (Ctrl+Shift+Q and inline commands) extends the assistant beyond chat into the text fields you already work in, which is the direction the whole tool was pointing toward anyway.
Key features
- Global shortcut + drawer mode (Ctrl+Shift+Space): invoke from any Windows app instantly; press Esc and the panel retracts to a 44×68px leash at the screen edge, thread and position intact.
- Selected-text actions: highlight text in any Windows application and trigger summarize, explain, rewrite, translate, or custom actions; press Ctrl+Shift+Q to replace the selection or insert the result directly in supported editors.
- Multi-provider BYOK: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, Ollama, LM Studio, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint; or sign in with OpenRouter via browser without manually copying an API key.
- Local folder indexing: index a folder and ask questions across its contents; indexing, search, and ranking all run on your PC with source references in every response.
- Document and file input: PDF (including scanned and image-only PDFs via vision-capable models), DOCX, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, saved email files, TXT, and Markdown; text is extracted locally and original files are never uploaded.
- Web search (v1.17.0): optional, per-conversation access to current web information with source citations; works with supported OpenAI, Claude, and OpenRouter models – off by default, provider charges may apply.
- Inline commands: type /fix, /short, /formal, or custom commands in supported text fields and press Tab to transform text in place – off by default, enable in Settings.
- Active Notes: keep persistent local notes, float them beside any app, and attach them as AI context when needed.
- Takeaways: save key points from conversations with private notes and optional AI-generated suggestions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I still need to pay for AI after claiming the free license?
Yes. The giveaway key covers the SideNote Pro application for 12 months; AI usage is separate. The easiest path is OpenRouter: sign in through the browser, no API key to copy, then pay your OpenRouter provider for what you use (paid models need credits). Alternatively, bring your own API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or DeepSeek. Run a local model via Ollama or LM Studio and there is no per-request charge at all.
Does SideNote Pro work on Windows 10 or Mac?
Windows 10 is now supported – you need version 2004 (build 19041) or higher on an x64 PC. Windows 11 x64 is also supported across Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education. Mac, Linux, and 32-bit Windows remain unsupported. If you are on Windows 10 and unsure of your build, check Settings > System > About before claiming your key.
What happens when my 1-year giveaway license expires?
AI generation stops – sending, regenerating, and editing prompts show a purchase prompt instead. Your conversation history, settings, and any exported files stay on your device and remain fully accessible. To keep using AI features, you would buy a SideNote Pro lifetime license at sidenotepro.com.
Are my conversations private? Does SideNote Pro store them on its servers?
No cloud storage. Your conversation threads are saved locally on your device under %LOCALAPPDATA%\SideNote Pro\ and never sent to BediniLabs servers. Requests you submit go to whichever AI provider you configured, and that provider applies its own privacy policies. With a local model (Ollama or LM Studio), nothing leaves your machine at all. SideNote Pro has no telemetry and no product analytics.
Can I use a free local AI model and avoid API fees entirely?
Yes. SideNote Pro has presets for Ollama (http://localhost:11434/v1) and LM Studio (http://localhost:1234/v1). You install and run the local server yourself, load a model, and point SideNote Pro at it. Inference runs on your hardware and there is no per-request charge. How well this works depends on your PC — local models are demanding, and a low-spec machine will struggle with larger ones.

The description states: ” It is a native Windows 11 AI tool built for desktop workers who want accurate answers without breaking focus, supporting OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, and local models via Ollama or LM Studio.” only problem is AI chatbots are renowned for providing inaccurate answers with absolute confidence that they are right because they DO NOT KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG, TRUTH FROM FICTION or even they just plain hallucinate. Heck allot of the AI LLM developers do not know right from wrong let alone truth from fiction and use drugs that make them hallucinate! User interfaces with no built in AI model access should always be free… does it run with local AI LLMs? We are already at the point where AI data-centers are competing with humans for natural resources… water and electricity that they are pushing up the prices of these basic necessities already for some people in countries like USA… And that’s just from HUMAN STUPIDY PUSHING AN ERROR PRONE TECHNOLOGY that has yet to reach General Intelligence and will of its own. AI is trusted with far too much critical work already and yet no one takes financial and legal responsibility when it does things that if a HUMAN did it would have resulted in criminal prosecution.
It needs an existing AI account (paid, and password protected) to work? Isn´t this a big securtiy risk if you give your account data to a 3rd party program?
Not quite. SideNote Pro does not ask for your AI account password or login details.
It uses an API key from the AI provider you choose (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, etc.). The API key is stored locally on your PC and protected using Windows DPAPI, and requests are sent directly to the selected AI provider — BediniLabs does not receive your prompts or API key.
Also, a ChatGPT paid subscription is not required; the OpenAI API, for example, is separate from ChatGPT subscriptions and uses its own API billing. You can also use local models through Ollama or LM Studio, which require no AI account at all.
So you should never give SideNote Pro your OpenAI/ChatGPT password — only an API key if you choose to use that provider.
